On August 11, Shanghai Disney Resort announced that Shanghai Disneyland will launch a new Spider-Man theme attraction, which will be the first major attraction in the theme park to tell the Marvel story. This new attraction will feature an action-packed roller coaster ride featuring the beloved Marvel superhero Spider-Man.

As the latest expansion project of Shanghai Disney Resort, pre-construction preparations for the new attraction began earlier this year. In addition, the resort’s current expansion project includes a third Disney-themed hotel adjacent to the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel. As the development of these two major expansion projects continues to progress, Shanghai Disney Resort will announce more project progress in the future.

According to the News Morning Post, in early July this year, the official website of the Shanghai Construction Engineering Transaction Service Center released the public bidding information of the Shanghai International Theme Park Co., LTD. “Aite Project” construction project, which is today’s official announcement of the new Marvel theme attractions. According to the public bidding information, the total investment of the new scenic spot is 2.459 billion yuan.
According to the bidding information, the construction land area of the new project is more than 20,000 square meters, the total construction area of the project is about 6227.86 square meters, and the building height is controlled below 24 meters. The main buildings and facilities are the amusement project, which includes 6 building monomers and site landscape development work.
Since its opening in June 2016, Shanghai Disney Resort has continued to expand its opening, including the Disney-Pixar Toy Story land, which opened in April 2018, and the Zootopia land, which opened in December 2023. In addition, the third Disney-themed hotel in Shanghai Disney Resort broke ground in August 2023, and the new theme hotel is located on the shores of the Wishing Lake, adjacent to the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel.

Currently, Hong Kong Disneyland has two Marvel-themed rides, “Iron Man Flight” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Strike Strike!” It was completed in 2017 and 2019 respectively, and has received more than millions of visitors since its opening. The new project will further expand the Marvel superhero Universe at Hong Kong Disneyland.

According to CNBC, theme parks have been a major driver of Disney’s profits. The company has pledged to invest about $60 billion in its theme parks over the next decade.

Revenue at Disney’s international theme parks rose 2%, the report said. Disney said, “Low-income consumers are feeling some of the pinch. Higher-income consumers are traveling internationally.”
It is worth mentioning that the international theme park business in Paris, Shanghai, Hong Kong performance is not good. Company executives cited, among other things, the troubles of Disneyland Paris due to its hosting of the Olympics.
