Hidden in the city, rest in the Valley — Minggu Hotel & Spa, Fuzhou/ATENO International

Located in Fuzhou, the capital of hot springs, Minggu Hotel is called “the city living in hot springs”. Fuzhou hot springs has a long and rich history, and has been famous throughout the country since the beginning of the Jin Dynasty. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Fuzhou built up more than 40 pools of Guantang (hot spring pools for officials) and Mintang (hot spring pools for civilians). 7 hot spring pools built before Tang Dynasty have lasted till now. Among the historic hot springs museum, Minggu Hotel has completed the contemporary interpretation of the ancient hot spring tradition. It brings the pleasure of being surrounded by mountains and rivers within the city walls. The Sun Moon Valley Group which is hold Minggu hotel has constantly created the charm of bathing by professional service.

The project as a whole is in the space atmosphere of the “Valley”. The designers have constructed the beauty of the shade of the sun and the hazy of the moon. Isolated from the noisy city, the independent space is self-contained. Minggu Hotel is the valley hidden in the city of Fuzhou. The gully, stone, water, bamboo and wood form a quiet and secluded atmosphere, while the geothermal energy and the river of stars fill the air with a lazy breath.

The Hotel is divided into public bathing area and the guest room area. Through the “water and fire” waiting hall, you may come into the guest room area. The waiting hall is small and delicate, designed with Zen. The main landscape design of faint flames and flow of water reveals a tranquil atmosphere. The floor of matte ink jade is elegant and supreme; the dark matte curtain isolates you from the outside world, which forms a private and compact space. The ceiling is densely embossed. People may recognize that it is a map of the ancient Fuzhou City. The design is full of details if you may notice. The 18 rooms are all named after trees, like fig, wingceltis, pine, fir and so on. Each room is equipped with luxurious bubble pool which can at least accommodate 2 guests. The white terrazzo bubble pool is hollowed out of a single piece of stone, simple and elegant.

Walking through the quiet path between the bamboo forest and the water walls, you can faintly notice the old tiles in the cracks of the wall, carrying mottled green moss. All the details turn around the time casually. Designer Sun Jianhua once said, “The current nature of the design, built between the past and the future, is now dynamic.” At Minggu Hotel, who can tell the feeling is the past or the future? A turn at end of the path, led to the public bathing area lobby. The wooden steps of the old boat are under your feet; the plant wall is hidden behind the sofas; the ground of black jade as if water and ink painting; and the stars on the ceiling merge into Minjiang River, the mother river of Fuzhou. The river of stars extends into the dressing area of male and female.

The water wall element also appears in the outdoor bathing area. Due to the different topography of the various pools, the water wall connects each pool and path, forming the atmosphere of waterfalls and streams in the valley. The matte black stone of the pools bring steadiness and dignity. The light reflected by the water, the steam in the air, the natural light and shadow created by the wall of diatom mud and the sparse plants resulting in a natural shelter, create the perfect private bathing space. The bathing area is connected to SPA leisure area. Along the sound of water into the depth of the “Valley”, you may find 11 SPA rooms. The walls and furniture are mainly decorated with bamboo, and the warmth of the spring contains the bamboo fragrance.Through the “water and fire” waiting hall, you may come into the guest room area. The waiting hall is small and delicate, designed with Zen. The main landscape design of faint flames and flow of water reveals a tranquil atmosphere. The position of Minggu Hotel by the designers is to pursue the contrast between light and shade, and produce the poetic space of different experiences. The “shade of the sun” and the “hazy of the moon” are the atmosphere features conveyed in different sections. The opening of the Chinese character “谷” (which means “valley” in English) is a kind of enclosure, a unique quiet place in the complicated metropolis. The courtyard space avoids the interference, increases the sense of spatial level and creates a pleasant environment like a piece of water and ink painting. The interior and the exterior surface together , keeping people close to the nature and offering peace and harmony.
